I owned one of these in the 80's with a Japanese movement and it ran smoothly without repair during the heavy and hard use of an active water sports enthusiast in his late teens and twenties. It dove, skied, sailed and stormed many beaches never failing me. I made the mistake of switching bands to a metal one and finally lost my old friend playing football in a beach in Hawaii. (I am sure it is still running somewhere in the depths of the pacific ocean). I made do with other watches for several years but finally decided to buy another one 5 years ago. This one has an automatic movement from Malaysia. It is currently on my wrist and so far it has never broken and I perceive no inaccuracy in its timekeeping. These days I am perhaps not as rough as I used to be on this one but I still sail and do a lot of water activities for which I am glad to have "a cousin" of my trusty old friend with me.

I replaced a three year old Pulsar watch with this new Seiko. The Pulsar watch was good looking but it had started stopping for no reason. I replaced the battery but it still stopped sporadically. This new Seiko watch runs great and looks great. I am very pleased with it. I have a dress watch by Seiko that has worked well for 11 years and still runs just fine which is why I went back to Seiko for my everyday watch.

It came quick and I got an awesome deal on it. I had to have my local retail jeweler take out some links, but they did it for free. Fits perfectly now. It's a beautiful watch and I want to wear it forever, it feels nice, hefty, you know that its quality and I get compliments on it. It arrived in a nice, blue Seiko box with white interior and displayed on a white leather Seiko watch pillow. I hope that helps you make your decision. Great watch!

My wife and kids got this for me as a birthday present. I haven't worn a dress watch much in years. I got used to using a Timex Ironman for running and the damned things are so cheap, accurate, rugged, and functional I just stopped using anything else. I have a Casio Pathfinder with altimeter, temp, and compass but that thing is so huge I wonder what the hell I was thinking when I bought it. And I will admit there are times when a watch with a plastic band and case are not the best choice. I also have an ultra thin Seiko rectangular dress watch with a leather band from the mid-eighties that's still working like new. So, when I mentioned a dress watch, my wife thought Seiko first. I bought her a Seiko Black Ion finish watch at Christmas to go with a set of black pearl earrings and necklace. So she bought me this watch to match six months later. I think the Seiko Kinetic is very cool. You get the accuracy and toughness of a quartz movement (which Seiko does very well) combined with a "self winding" feature without the complex mechanical components of swiss watches. And the Seiko system can store enough energy for six months of operation in its lithium cell. Try that with a Rolex.

The watch came out of the box with the minimum 1-7 day charge on the indicator. After two days, it reached the 1 month charge level. After about a week, it still hasn't reached the top level 4-6 month charge. Not bad. About what I expected. As for the finish, I love the black n gold design. It's a bit different from your run of the mill stainless or gold design. I did a little research on the Titanium Carbon Nitride finish and discovered that this stuff is what they use to coat high speed cutting tools for extremely hard materials. Titanium Nitride comes produces a metallic "gold" color. Adding carbon to the mix turns Titanium Carbon Nitride into a ceramic coating with extreme hardness relative to the stainless steel substrate it's applied to. To me, a ceramic coating means this watch will be very resistant to oxidation and scratching as well as unique in appearance. The black n gold may be a little too flashy or over the top for some people or occasions but for general wear at business functions or going out to dinner, I think it's sharp looking. I really can't understand why people buy Rolex with Seiko around. Highly recommended. The company and the watch.

It's a good watch. I seriously question that this is actually a gray-market item as it didn't come with a manual, just a warranty card. I blame that more on Seiko, they don't sell all their models everywhere, so I half expected it when I got it.

It's just like the other SNK809K watches, but with a metal band. It's easily user adjustable, it's not a pin and collar band, all you'll need is a push-pin or a paperclip. It's not a fancy band and does rattle a bit, but it has solid end links so it should at least stay together well. There are 3 micro adjustments on the band, so it should be easy to size it to your liking.

As for accuracy, it's a 7S26B movement. Mine ran fast for about the first week or so that I had it but it seems to have broken in and is keeping time spot on now, or at least less than +/- 1 sec a day so that I can't notice it. Since the movement is non-hacking, it's not for those very picky about being exactly correct. There is no hand winding either, so if you're not planning on wearing it frequently be prepared to set it often. Oh, setting the watch is easy, just make sure you get the AM/PM right on it, set the day/date a day earlier and then advance the time until it flips them and then set the time.

Not sure what else to say. It's hard to go wrong with a Seiko 5.

Despite claims that this watch is discontinued, I was still able to order one as of 8/11/2010. However, it is hard to find outside of Amazon, especially at this price.

Also, the user's photo showing this as silver/dark silver are incorrect. The watch is black! Even under intense light it never looks silver. Seiko may have changed the way they darkened the watch though since 2007, or J Lee may have received a different watch variation. But I'm happy with the darkness as it looks exactly like (if not darker than) the Amazon product image which is what I was looking for. The best way I can describe it is as a very dark charcoal gray.

Some things to keep in mind:
- The face of the watch has black dots
- The alarm is single use only and must be set again after it goes off.
- The alarm rings for 20 secs then stops (unless you push a button of course)
- The alarm can only be set in a time frame 12 hours from the current time. So if you wanted to set an alarm for 8 AM you'd have to do so after 8 PM.
- The glow-in-the-dark elements aren't the strongest. My older Seiko from 2001 has a stronger glow.

I wanted to have a persistent alarm, and it wasn't clear from the description that this was a single-use alarm, thus the one star detraction. However, everything else about the watch is fantastic, and I absolutely love the way it looks.

I have thin wrists, but after removing several links the watch fits and stays snug.

Some Seikos have a lot of charm and personality (the Sumo, the Monsters, the Razorback, etc). This watch ain't one of those. It is instead a highly polished efficient timekeeper that does its job in a flawless though bland manner. It keeps time, it's well made, it looks nice in an understated way, and it will probably last for 10-15 years without needing a battery or service. This is remarkable, yet also unexciting. Some watches are for collectors, others are for utilitarians. The SKA 389 (notice the lack of a catchy nickname!) is in the latter category.

First, how it works. This is a quartz movement, accurate to within 3-5 seconds per month. This is about 30 times better than the best automatic movements available. That said, the movement lacks the soul of an automatic - the second hand moves in discrete boring one second chunks from one notch to the next, without the fluid sweep of a mechanical watch. If you want aesthetics, there is little on display here, but if you want the time delivered accurately, here you go.

Unlike a regular quartz though, the SKA will not need a battery in a few years. The Kinetics use a rotor to generate electrical current which is then stored in a high capacity titanium lithium ion battery. (The current models of Kinetics no longer use the capacitors that the initial models did. Seiko had problems with that device and switched over to these batteries.) Unlike your cell phone battery, this combination of battery and power level is good for roughly 20 years according to Seiko. The tech hasn't been around that long of course, so we can take that as an estimate only, but I would say you'll get at least a decade out of it without needing service or a new battery.

Seiko wants you to think of this watch as being a hybrid of automatic and quartz technologies, so they have an "exhibition" (see-through) case back so you can watch the rotor as it turns around in back. You can also hear a mechanical whir and feel the rotor turn as you swing your arm. The actual movement though is not visible through the case back (just as well, as most quartz movements resemble circuit boards more than anything else) so instead you see the rotor and a few big gears that generate the current. There is nothing elegant here, and if you are expecting something like a decorated jeweled ETA movement here, you will be sorely disappointed. You'll watch the rotor turn for maybe 5 minutes, show it to a few friends, and then never look at it again. In comparison, the average automatic watch movement is far more charming to observe, even over the long term, but again the SKA 389 ain't about entertainment or charm.

Seiko tells you in the manual that the max power reserve on the SKA 389 is 6 months. (That is how long the watch would take to stop if you took it off and didn't wear it.) To hit that level, you'll have to swing the watch back in forth in your hand many thousands of times or walk about a mile in less than 48 hours. Wearing the watch over the course of a single day will get you about a week's reserve, so most users who are not vigorously active will only slowly build up a reserve, and will probably rarely hit the full six month reserve. Regardless, you'll have more than enough power on hand to take the watch off at night, for a weekend, or even a whole week. This is far superior to even the best automatics, which will give you 40-50 hours of maximum reserve power at full wind.

Aesthetics: functional and low key. The matte black finish is elegant and the watch feels well made. As with all Seikos, finish and detail is impeccable, and the watch looks far more expensive than it is. My complaints are with the size of the watch and the band. The 40.5 mm diameter of the watch is smallish for ordinary male wrists. As with all Kinetics, the square base plate (that the circular face sits on) is disproportionately large (part of the generator assembly I guess) so the watch has a bit of a squarish shape on your arm rather than the more traditional circle, which makes the 30mm face of the watch look smaller than it is. According to current style, men should have about a 42mm faced watch (or bigger) so this watch is unstylishly small, at least unless your wrists are also small. My 7.5 inch wrist is by no means huge, but this watch looks teeny on it. Adding insult to injury, the band is also quite narrow, so narrow band and average to small sized face means this watch will be utterly lost on a big guy's arm. If you don't mind this, or if your wrist is not that large, this is not an issue.

Warranty is three years. The watch also has a "power reserve" reading feature where you can press a second button and get a rough indicator of your power reserve by the movement of the second hand. After sweeping to show you the power level, the second hand freezes in place until the time "catches up" with it and then starts moving again. A neat gimmick, but one you'll probably use only to make sure the watch is working correctly. There is a date complication on the face. The watch has a steel bezel that can be used as a countdown timer, and this bezel rotates smoothly and precisely. It is functional and understated (see a trend here?) but does not feel as sturdy or precise as the excellent bezel used on, say, the Monster series of dive watches. Water resistant to 100 meters. Hands and markers are luminescent, with average lifespan of glow in the dark time, maybe four to six hours or so of readability in the dark I would estimate.

All in all, this is a good watch for people who want to own one watch. It's not especially collectible, and doesn't have much of a dynamic personality. It will get the job done and work well and last long in the process. Think of it as the Toyota of watches, though without the current recall issues. If you are a guy with small wrists who need a reliable and reasonably attractive watch, you probably won't go wrong with buying this especially at the excellent Amazon price offered at time of this review. If you're a watch buff who likes to collect timepieces with character, you may want to pass on this. The "eternal-battery" feature is nice and the kinetic charging feels somewhat grittier than the bland potted plant solar charging systems offered by Casio and Citizen, but this particular example of the Seiko Kinetic line is not built for personality.

I was not sure how to approach this review, so I will make it simple. Seiko have (in my opinion) designed one of the most aesthetic timepieces of the modern age. I owned the great and mighty Tag S/El Chronograph, another fantastically designed watch in a sea of humdrum looking pieces. Yes there are more expensive Breitlings and Rolexes, and from a technical perspective these and some elite other marques are more advanced and complex in their mechanisms be they mechanical or otherwise if compared to the Seiko.

Anyway it comes with a leather case in the form of a cylinder with rooom for three watches - included also is a precision tool for resizing your carbonized titanium strap OR taking it off and putting the alternative sumptious leather strap with orange stitching (bear in mind this is a watch designed for Motorsport - I believe). My humble Motorsporting is taking my M5 out for a thrashing now and again at the nearby race track in Karlskoga - so I did not purchase this watch to time my laps in the F1 car (I wish!).
Also cool is there are only 2005 of these watches and on the back you can see which number of the 2005 your watch is.

Anyway I bought the watch and put it on straight away - I had to shake it 200 times to charge it for use, but once worn full time - you dont have to worry about this again as the Kinetic movement charges the capacitor/battery for continous timekeeping - if fully charged it will run for a month if not used.

Ok cost wise its not for everyone - but for those who have an interest in watches - and I don't just mean the elite mechanical masterpieces with a million jewels and umpteen thousand moving parts, but in design and function - this is a superb watch, with very low maintenace attached.

There is no watch on this planet in terms of looks that makes me go WOW! Other than the SLQ019 - nicely done Seiko!

I am very happy with this watch after trying and returning a couple of diver watches. I like the fact that this watch looks similar in design to a diver's watch but its not quite as bold. For example, the black rotating bezel is much smaller than the typical dive watch. The chronometer dials and other face features are nicely styled, subtle, yet eye-catching. The case is weighty looking but not too large. I like that the top surfaces are brushed, but the sides are polished. The band is very high quality, mostly brushed stainless steel (the inner edges are polished) and hold up well (no scratches - yet). Only minor detractions are that I would have liked a larger date display, and the pin holes on the sides of the lugs (where it connects to the band). Also, be aware that you will probably have difficulty replacing the band for a leather one, or even another metal one since the case has a center projection between the lugs that integrates into the band. In summary, a great cross-over watch that looks great in both casual and business attire. This watch is hard to beat for the price - it really looks as though it should cost much more.
